Ellis praise Banyana Banyana character despite loss

CAPE TOWN – Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis showered her side with praises despite a 2-1 loss in their first match of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

South Africa opened their campaign against Group G counterparts Sweden at Wellington Regional Stadium on Sunday.

Ellis’ charges managed to end the first half without conceding even though Sweden was looking too strong and likely to score first through their endless set pieces.

But it was the African side who broke the deadlock first through striker Hildah Magaia.

Ellis believes her side showed true character against the third-ranked Sweden.

“We had a game plan and I thought it worked throughout, I thought we were defensively very sound. We knew that they were going to be challenging at set pieces,” said Ellis.

“We have handled that very well – our transitions could’ve been better. We were working on all those things as the game went on. We tried to make changes to make sure that still stands.

“Unfortunately we conceded in a moment when we were in total control of the game and that put us back and then to concede right at the end was cruel but that is football.

“I thought of this performance even though it was a loss, we are very proud of the way we played, we might not have the preparations we wanted but the group of players have shown resilience and bravery.”

South Africa’s next match will see them facing Argentina on Friday.
