No Pollard, no problem? Rassie backs Libbok for England

Rassie Erasmus has thrown his support behind Manie Libbok in one of the most intriguing selection calls of the Springboks’ season, handing the mercurial playmaker the No 10 jersey for Saturday’s inaugural Nations Championship opener against England while leaving double World Cup-winning flyhalf Handre Pollard out of the matchday 23.

The decision speaks volumes.

Pollard has been rugby’s ultimate big-match conductor for more than a decade, guiding South Africa to back-to-back World Cup triumphs with his ice-cold temperament and reliable boot. His recent form, however, has lacked its familiar polish, opening the door for Libbok to seize control of the Bok attack at Ellis Park.

With Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu sidelined through injury, Erasmus has resisted selecting another specialist flyhalf on the bench. Instead, the Springbok coach has placed his faith in versatility. Should Libbok leave the field, Damian Willemse is expected to shift into the pivotal No 10 role, with Canan Moodie capable of slotting into the back three or midfield.

It is a calculated gamble rather than a reckless roll of the dice. Willemse has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to steer the attack, while Moodie’s versatility gives Erasmus valuable tactical flexibility.

The selection also raises another fascinating subplot. Cheslin Kolbe assumed the primary goal-kicking duties against the Barbarians last week and could continue in that role against England, easing pressure on Libbok and allowing the flyhalf to focus on unlocking England’s defensive line with his vision and attacking instincts.

While Libbok headlines the selection debate, Saturday will also be a golden occasion for Willemse and Kolbe, who celebrate their 50th Test appearances exactly eight years after making their Springbok debuts. Two players who have danced through defences with the grace of matadors now reach a milestone reserved for the game’s enduring performers.

The rest of the starting side is built on familiar foundations. Siya Kolisi captains South Africa for the 72nd time, returning to Ellis Park where his leadership journey began against England in 2018.

The Bok pack remains an imposing fortress. Test centurions Kolisi and Eben Etzebeth are joined by Pieter-Steph du Toit, Jasper Wiese and Ruan Nortje, while Malcolm Marx packs down between Ox Nche and Thomas du Toit in a front row designed to turn every scrum into a collision of continents.

Outside Libbok and Grant Williams, Jesse Kriel partners Damian de Allende in midfield, with Kurt-Lee Arendse completing an electric back three alongside Kolbe and Willemse.

Erasmus has opted for a five-three split among the replacements. Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Gerhard Steenekamp, Zach Porthen, Marco van Staden and Cameron Hanekom provide the forward cover, while Cobus Reinach, Andre Esterhuizen and Moodie offer versatility across the backline.

Franco Mostert misses the match with a niggle, Lood de Jager is unavailable due to illness and Riley Norton has been released from the squad after suffering an injury. Ethan Hooker is expected to join the squad in Johannesburg on Monday following his recovery from a shoulder injury.

“England are a quality outfit, and we are expecting them to give everything they have in this match, so it was important to select a squad with experience combined with a few younger players, who have proved that they have what it takes to perform at this level,” Erasmus said.

“The players have worked very hard at training, and they know what it takes to perform against a side of this calibre with a good coaching team, so we hope they can transfer that effort onto the field on Saturday.

“It was great to have a run against the Barbarians and Zimbabwe last week because it afforded some of our players some valuable game time, but this weekend will be a different prospect altogether.

“England are a settled team, they come off a Six Nations campaign earlier in the season, and, similarly to us, they will also want to have a good start to this exciting new competition, so we are expecting it to be a bruising encounter.”

On Kolbe and Willemse reaching their half-century of Tests, Erasmus added:

“They have both been stalwarts for us over the years, and as a team we would like to make it a memorable day for them. It’s not every day you have two players playing their 50th Test, so that will certainly add to our motivation this week.

“That said, England will come to Johannesburg as determined as ever, so it’s going to be a hard grind of a match, which will require us to be accurate in every facet of the game, and convert the opportunities we create into points, but they will have the same mindset, so we need to hit the ground running if we want to do well.”

Kick-off is at 17:40 following the Springbok Women’s historic first home Test against the USA at 13:30.
