Heartbreak for Bafana Bafana as Canada strike late to end historic World Cup run

CAPE TOWN – South Africa’s remarkable FIFA World Cup journey came to a heartbreaking end after suffering a dramatic 1-0 defeat to Canada in their Round of 32 clash at Los Angeles Stadium on Sunday.

Bafana Bafana entered the knockout encounter full of confidence after finishing second in Group A following their memorable 1-0 victory over South Korea. Coach Hugo Broos made just one change to the side, recalling midfielder Teboho Mokoena after serving his suspension in place of Thalente Mbatha, as the Belgian looked to maintain the team’s winning momentum.

The opening exchanges were evenly contested, with both teams taking time to settle into the high-stakes encounter. Canada created the first meaningful opportunity in the seventh minute when Stephen Eustaquio unleashed a long-range effort that sailed over the crossbar.

South Africa remained disciplined defensively, with Thapelo Maseko producing a vital block two minutes later as Canada searched for an early breakthrough.

The Canadians continued to threaten through Jonathan David, who volleyed wide from a corner in the 17th minute, before Derek Cornelius headed comfortably into the hands of Ronwen Williams from a free-kick four minutes later.

Williams was called into action again in the 35th minute, denying Tani Oluwaseyi with a fine save, while Oswin Appollis came closest for Bafana Bafana before the break when his effort was blocked to earn South Africa a corner.

Canada nearly snatched the lead moments before halftime, but Aubrey Modiba produced a crucial clearance after Williams had initially parried Tajon Buchanan’s close-range effort. The teams went into the interval locked at 0-0.

Broos introduced Mbatha for Relebohile Mofokeng at the start of the second half in search of fresh energy, while Canada coach Jesse Marsch also turned to his bench as the contest remained finely balanced.

Appollis fired narrowly wide in the 61st minute before defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi produced a heroic goal-line clearance three minutes later after Williams had made another important save.

With neither side able to create clear-cut opportunities, extra time appeared inevitable. However, Canada’s relentless pressure finally paid off in stoppage time when captain Eustaquio found space inside the area and clinically fired home in the first minute of added time to break South African hearts.

Despite a brave and disciplined performance, Bafana Bafana bowed out of the tournament with their heads held high after a spirited World Cup campaign that saw them reach the knockout stages for the first time.

Canada progressed to the Round of 16 with a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
