Power play propels Springboks past fearless Scotland

The Springboks found another gear when the heat was at its fiercest, bludgeoning Scotland 42-28 in a bruising Nations Championship thriller that sent a roaring Loftus Versfeld into full voice on Saturday.

The scoreline sparkled. The performance left plenty of food for thought.

South Africa crossed six times to Scotland’s four, yet coach Rassie Erasmus, who celebrated a record-breaking 55th Test as Springbok head coach, watched his side flirt with danger through defensive lapses that invited the visitors back into the fight.

For 40 minutes, Scotland punched well above their weight.

Gregor Townsend’s men attacked with swagger, carrying through wave after wave of possession while Finn Russell painted pictures with every touch. Captain Sione Tuipulotu was the beating heart of the Scottish challenge, battering defenders, lifting teammates and refusing to take a backward step.

The Boks landed the first blow.

Embrose Papier rolled back the years in the 17th minute. Eight years after his previous Test, the Bulls scrumhalf sprang over the middle of a ruck, danced through scattered defenders and crashed over for a try that lit up Loftus.

Moments later Evan Roos muscled over after Cobus Wiese tore into the Scottish defence like a runaway freight train. Handre Pollard added both conversions and South Africa appeared ready to disappear over the horizon at 14-0.

Scotland had other ideas.

The Boks slipped off too many tackles and paid the price.

Zander Fagerson bulldozed over after sustained pressure before Russell and Tuipulotu carved open the home defence to send Kyle Rowe racing across before the halftime siren. Russell’s conversion tied the scores at 14-14 and suddenly the visitors were dreaming.

The dream gathered even more momentum early in the second half when replacement lock Ben-Jason Dixon was yellow-carded for dangerous head contact.

Then Erasmus reached for his greatest weapon.

The Bomb Squad.

The impact was instant.

South Africa ripped up the script and took the direct route. The forwards became wrecking balls. Every carry drained Scottish energy. Every collision echoed around Loftus.

Elrigh Louw crashed over. Damian Willemse finished a slick attack after superb work with Edwill van der Merwe. Young prop Zachary Porthen crowned a dream debut with a powerhouse try that shook the old stadium to its foundations.

Still Scotland refused to fold.

Russell waved his magic wand again and, within two breathless minutes, Josh Bayliss and Ben White struck to slash the deficit to 35-28.

Loftus held its breath.

The Springboks never blinked.

Jesse Kriel delivered the knockout punch, crashing over to slam the door shut and finally break Scottish hearts.

Pollard kicked five conversions before Quan Horn added the last two points.

The world champions banked another victory. Their attack flashed brilliance. Their bench flexed frightening muscle. Their defence, though, remains a work in progress.

Against stronger opponents, generosity at the gainline can become a very expensive habit.
