Cape Town Festival of Running gives every kilometre a cause with SPCA partnership

The roads along Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard will carry more than runners this July. They will carry hope.

When the Cape Town Festival of Running returns to the Sea Point Promenade on 18 and 19 July, thousands of participants will have an opportunity to turn sweat into support after the Cape of Good Hope SPCA was named an official beneficiary of the event for the first time.

It will also be the seond year  the Festival of Running will be supporting The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA).

The partnership adds a meaningful dimension to one of the Mother City’s most established road running festivals, transforming every stride into a potential lifeline for vulnerable animals.

Hosted by Hewat Athletics Club, the 26th edition of the festival caters for every level of runner.

Elite athletes can tackle the demanding 50km ultra marathon, recreational runners can test themselves over the scenic 21.1km route, while families, friends and colleagues can join forces in the popular 5x5km relay.

This year, however, the spotlight extends beyond finish lines and personal bests.

Participants can support the SPCA during the registration process by selecting the organisation as their chosen charity and making a donation. Those who contribute R300 or more will receive a special token of appreciation from the animal welfare organisation.

“The Cape Town Festival of Running has always been about bringing communities together through sport,”  said Sonia Peters Chairperson of Hewat Athletic Club.

“This partnership with the Cape of Good Hope SPCA allows us to extend that impact beyond the race route. Every entry becomes an opportunity to support an organisation that performs vital work every day of the year.”

The festival arrives on Madiba birthday weekend, adding further significance to an event built around service and community spirit.

While runners will still be drawn by the spectacular route and challenge, organisers believe the opportunity to make a difference will resonate strongly with participants.

The half marathon remains one of the event’s standout attractions. Starting opposite the SABC building on the Sea Point Promenade, runners will trace the Atlantic coastline through Sea Point and Camps Bay before climbing onto Victoria Road towards Hout Bay. Ocean views accompany much of the route, while rolling hills ensure the race bites back often enough to keep competitors honest.

“The scenery is unforgettable, but this year there is an even bigger reason to take part,” said Peters.

“Whether you are running your first relay leg or tackling 50 kilometres, you can help improve the lives of animals in our community. That gives every kilometre greater purpose.”

The 5X5 relay and 50km Ultra Route

Entries for the festival are already open, with the 50km ultra marathon taking place on Saturday, 18 July, followed by the 5x5km relay later that day. The 21.1km half marathon starts on Sunday, 19 July.

For many runners, the chase for a medal will remain a powerful motivator. This year, though, the event offers something more enduring. Long after the finish line banners come down and aching legs recover, the impact of every donated rand could continue changing lives, one paw print at a time.
