Absa RUN YOUR CITY SERIES Cape Town 10K set for fireworks

The streets of Cape Town are primed for a high-octane road running spectacle as a glittering field of elite athletes prepares to attack the Absa RUN YOUR CITY SERIES Cape Town 10K like a pack of thoroughbreds charging down the home straight.

The race starts at 09h00 at Woodbridge Island in Milnerton and finishes at the Grand Parade in front of the City Hall in the shadow of Table Mountain

Like a tightly wound peloton surging toward the final bend, the men’s race carries the scent of raw speed and tactical brinkmanship. Kenya’s Felix Kibet Masai arrives with a searing 27:24 personal best and appears ready to ignite the race from the gun.

South African veteran Stephen Mokoka remains the nation’s road-running compass and brings the experience of countless championship battles, while Kabelo Mulaudzi and Tanzania’s Jummanne Ngoya add further horsepower to an already combustible contest.

The local charge is stacked with aggressive racers capable of turning the race into a tactical knife fight. Bongelani Mkhwanazi, Chris Mhlanga and William Kaptein have the wheels to cling to the early pace if the race detonates before halfway.

“This field is moving like a pack of sports cars lined up on the start grid,” said Mokoka. “Cape Town rewards brave running and anybody hesitating could get dropped fast.”

The women’s race carries even greater historical weight. South African road running has long chased the elusive sub-30 minute barrier and this year’s lineup has the firepower to finally crack it. Kenya’s Faith Cherono arrives with a blistering 30:06 best and will likely tow the field through a ferocious opening tempo. Fellow Kenyan Jackline Rotich adds another sharp edge to the front pack.

Yet much of the spotlight will settle on the gripping duel between South African stars Glenrose Xaba and Tayla Kavanagh. Xaba has evolved into the country’s queen of the road, gliding through races with ruthless closing speed. Kavanagh, fearless and rapidly improving, has become one of the most exciting figures in domestic distance running.

“With such a quality field of female runners, I know the pace will be very quick from the start,” said Xaba. “That’s the kind of challenge elite runners dream about.”

Kavanagh added: “Sub-30 has hovered over South African women’s running for years. We want to chase history, not watch it from behind.”

With deep international fields, national pride and history dangling like a finish-line ribbon across the horizon, Cape Town’s roads are set to roar beneath racing shoes this weekend.
