Cape Town – What was meant to be a day of community, culture, and physical achievement turned into a scene of sorrow at Cape Town’s annual Slave Route Challenge, when a female participant tragically lost her life after being struck by a falling tree.

The incident occurred in the Company’s Garden, a tranquil and historic area in central Cape Town that forms part of the race’s 10-kilometre route. While thousands of runners took part in the beloved event on Sunday, tragedy unfolded when an oak tree unexpectedly collapsed, fatally injuring the runner. Emergency personnel responded swiftly and transported her to hospital. Despite all medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries.
The woman’s identity has not been publicly disclosed, and her family has asked for privacy as they grieve.
Race organisers, from the Itheko Sport Athletic Club issued a heartfelt statement following the incident, expressing their profound sadness. “We are devastated by this tragic accident. Our deepest condolences go out to her family, friends, and all affected by this loss,” they said.
The Slave Route Challenge is a significant event in Cape Town’s sporting and cultural calendar. It honours the city’s complex past by guiding participants through key historical landmarks, including District Six, the Castle of Good Hope, and the vibrant Bo-Kaap. It draws runners from all walks of life, uniting the city in remembrance and celebration.

Organisers emphasised that extensive safety planning had been conducted in collaboration with city officials and emergency services. “All safety and security protocols were in place,” their statement noted. “This was an unforeseeable and deeply tragic event.”
In response to the incident, the City of Cape Town confirmed that an investigation is underway, in partnership with SAPS and emergency responders. Arborists from the parks department are assessing the site to determine whether there were any warning signs that could have prevented the tree’s collapse.
City officials also stated that a review of public tree maintenance procedures will be conducted to ensure the ongoing safety of residents and visitors in public spaces. “This tragedy has been met with great concern and urgency,” a spokesperson said.
“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, and we will support the race organisers as the investigation progresses.”
