Glasgow Warriors outclass poor Stormers in Stellenbosch

STELLENBOSCH – The Glasgow Warriors showed why they are the current defending United Rugby Championships (URC) Champions when they earned a well-deserved bonus point victory over an error-strewn Stormers at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch on Saturday.

Coach Franco Smith’s side were looking to bounce back after a narrow loss to Sharks last week.

And they did so by convincingly beating John Dobson’s men by 28-17 after the scores were locked 7-7 at half time.

The result sees Glasgow – who stole two bonus points in their defeat against the Sharks – move up to second on the table, with the Stormers staying in 12th.

It was the Stormers who broke the deadlock in the first half with fullback Warrick Gelant putting centre Damian Willemse through for the try with a deft pop pass. Willemse unfortunately seemed to injure his groin as he crossed the line.

Glasgow made sure they got a word in, too, with a try from Jonny Matthews just before the break.

The Scottish team began the second half with a try from centre Sione Tuipulotu, and although the Stormers retaliated with a try from their captain Dan du Plessis, they  couldn’t contain the Warriors, who scored another two though left wing Kyle Rowe and replacement loose forward Henco Venter.

Captain Sione Tuipulotu capped off a landmark week with a superlative showing against the Cape side.

Tuipolotu, who was named Scotland captain by national coach Gregor Townsend for the autumn internationals, confirmed his leadership credentials.

Besides scoring a try, he had a hand in two more in an impressive second-half showing in the midfield combination with former Stormers center Huw Jones.

Coach Smith’s side were looking to bounce back after a narrow loss to the Sharks last week.

Dobson would be disappointed with his side’s disjointed performance. Even though they had dominance in the scrums, the home side couldn’t find any rhythm on attack.

There were too many wayward passes and it seemed as if the players were trying to force things instead of showing composure and patience when in possession.

The Stormers will also be concerned over the status of Willemse and flanker Ben-Jason Dixon, as both Springboks left the field with injuries in the first half.

Willemse’s injury will be of particularly be worrying because the talented utility back  last played for the Boks in World Cup final in France last year.

The Stormers have now only won two out of five games thus far. With the amount of talented x-factor players at their disposal, it’s an unacceptable position to be in.

Following the four-week international break, the Stormers will resume URC action on 30 November with a trip to Durban to take on the Sharks.

It’s time for Dobson and his charges to do some serious introspection before then.

Glasgow 28 (7) Tries: Jonny Matthews, Sione Tuipulotu, Kyle Rowe, Henco Venter; Conversions: Adam Hasting (2), Tom Jordan (2)
