Hermann’s unbeaten ton secures Sunrisers stunning victory over MI Cape Town

Jordan Hermann was the star of the show when he scored an unbeaten maiden century for the Sunrisers Eastern Cape who clinched nail-biting four-run victory over MI Cape Town in their SA20 encounter at Newlands on Tuesday.

The stylish left-hander fronted up to a MI Cape Town attack that included seasoned internationals such Proteas duo Kagiso Rabada and Beuran Hendricks along with England internationals Sam Curran and Olly Stone to piece together a splendid 106 not off 62 balls (8×4, 6×6) that lifted the Sunrisers to a thrilling victory  for the defending champions.

“It was very special (scoring 100). I’m just glad I was on the winning side otherwise it’s pointless,” Hermann said at a press conference after the exciting game that was decided with the last ball.

“I don’t want to focus on personal milestones. We are happy with the win, but more proud about getting the execution right. I just tried to get as many runs as I can.”

Hermann says the Sunrisers don’t feel pressurized as the defending champions.

“That is in the past. We must now just try and win as much games as possible. We have to focus on the moment and execute on every ball. We can take real confidence from the win, but the game is gone now and we have to focus on the next challenge.

Hermann was involved with a brilliant partnership with Dawid Malan who combined well with him.

“It was awesome to play with a guy like Dawid Malan who took a lot of pressure off me. He was calm and composed on the other side. It’s great to be able to learn from the people around us. They all incredible people,” said Hermann.

“I have learnt a lot over the past six months. And yes, I’m still learning a lot. I am trying to be consistent but it has been tough for me. It’s been a hectic few months and I am just grateful that something like tis happens. I am still wondering how it became possible for me to be at this stage.”

Chasing 203 runs for victory under lights in Cape Town, the hosts got off to a stellar start with another impactful opening stand between Ryan Rickelton and Rassie van der Dussen.

Rickelton once again scored a superb quick-fire fifty, hitting five sixes and two fours to make 58 off 33 balls before he was caught off the bowling of Ottniel Baartman. Van der Dussen made a handy contribution of 41 off 28 before he was caught off the bowling of Liam Dawson.

Baartman then struck twice as he dismissed a wild Dewald Brevis for eight and bowled Liam Livingstone for two. Skipper Kieron Pollard and Sam Curran made a fifty-stand to give the hosts some hope but Daniel Worrall got the breakthrough as Pollard was caught in the deep for 24.

Needing 15 off six balls, Sam Curran tried to steer the hosts to their target with an unbeaten 37 off 22 balls as MI Cape Town fell short by four runs.

“We always knew if we can take a wicket the run rate will go down and that is exactly what happened. I am very much more that a cricket lover and watcher and it’s difficult to almost. All I want to do now is to help my team win. Whatever happens after this is up to fate,” explained Hermann.
