Mosiako and Khatala strikes gold at 2026 Hollywoodbets Joburg 10k

NASREC, JOHANNESBURG – Thabang Mosiako and Neheng Khatala struck gold on Johannesburg’s streets on Sunday, pocketing R40,000 apiece as the Hollywoodbets Joburg 10km delivered fast racing, big rewards and a festival atmosphere at Nasrec.

Nedbank Running Club’s Mosiako defended his title in 30:43, while host-club favourite Khatala ruled the women’s race in 33:40 at South Africa’s richest-paying stand-alone 10km event.

The prize money ensured a lucrative finish for the leading athletes in both races, with runners-up earning R32,500 and third-place finishers collecting R30,000.

The undulating course, contested in warm conditions, tested the field as the event moved to a new start-and-finish venue near FNB Stadium. A combined 12,000 runners entered the 10km and 5km races, doubling last year’s participation and transforming Nasrec into a road-running carnival.

Mosiako’s triumph was especially satisfying after he raced a marathon in Cologne, Germany, only two weeks earlier. Concerned about fatigue and his history of injuries, the North West-born athlete found another gear when it mattered.

“I am really happy with my achievement today because it’s my second time running the Hollywoodbets Joburg. I think it was my third or fourth, but I have been maintaining a podium finish, so I can say I am very happy I managed to defend my title,” he said.

He dedicated his victory to his wife, Thandi, for her support as he manages his fitness and guards against further injuries.

“I will be happy if I can be in the top three, and I know it seems impossible, but I will fight,” Mosiako said of his next challenge.

His focus now shifts to the Diamonds & Dorings Kimberley Bighole Marathon, where he will contest the 21.1km half-marathon on Saturday, 24 October.

Former Comrades Marathon champion Edward Mothibi finished second in 30:51, with Rebaone Obotseng recording the same time for third. Their performances underline the quality of the men’s field, with both athletes looking in strong shape ahead of Kimberley. Mothibi will target the 42.2km marathon on Sunday, 25 October.

In the women’s race, Lesotho international Khatala delivered a controlled performance to win in 33:40. UK-born Emma Pallant-Brown finished second in 35:04.

The Hollywood AC duo of the evergreen Irvette van Zyl third in 35:17 and hot on her teammate’s heels in fourth place, the golden girl of South African ultra distance running Gerda Steyn  in 35:42.

Khatala, a former Soweto Marathon winner, said the course demanded patience and strength.

“It was hilly, but it needs someone who is disciplined, mature enough and has the strength,” she said.

Having previously raced on the route during the Soweto Marathon, Khatala knew where the challenge would intensify because the two races share the same last two kilometres.

“I knew I did not have to go too fast; just manage my speed and balance the pace so I get to the finish because I did not want to be slaughtered at the end,” she said.

With a successful title defence, a home-club triumph and substantial prize money on offer, Joburg delivered a compelling showcase of South African road-running talent. For Mosiako and Mothibi, the next test is already on the horizon in Kimberley.

Khatala, Van Zyl and Steyn will travel to Bloemfontein to tackle the inaugural Absa RUN YOUR CITY  Mangaung 10K next Sunday.
