The Stormers have lost one of their hottest attacking sparks to concussion ahead of Saturday’s Investec Champions Cup showdown against Bristol Bears, leaving Evan Roos to shoulder the number eight jersey as Cape Town prepares for a European rugby examination.
Dynamic loose forward Hacjivah Dayimani has been ruled out after lighting up DHL Stadium in the Stormers’ emphatic 39-22 United Rugby Championship victory over the Hollywoodbets Sharks last weekend.
Dayimani crossed for two tries, while a Damian Willemse knock-on in the build-up denied the 29-year-old a potential hat-trick. His blistering start to the season also earned him man-of-the-match honours against Connacht and Edinburgh, making his absence a significant blow to John Dobson’s plans.
Roos, returning from a hamstring injury, gets his first appearance of the season in the Stormers’ opening European campaign fixture at 16:15 on Saturday.
Dobson admitted the loose forwards have become an injury flashpoint, with Marcel Theunissen, Ruan Ackerman, Keke Morabe and BJ Dixon also unavailable.
“It’s been tough,” the director of rugby acknowledged. “To be able to replace Hacjivah, as you said, in great form, Evan’s fantastic for us.”
The selection retains continuity in the backline, while the front row receives a complete overhaul. Vernon Matongo, JJ Kotzé and Sazi Sandi start behind captain Ruhan Nel, with André-Hugo Venter, Ntuthuko Mchunu and Zachary Porthen providing reinforcements. Warrick Gelant joins the replacements.
Dobson believes the rotation will help maintain the pack’s intensity across two demanding competitions. He highlighted Sandi’s speed and the need for the front row to preserve the Stormers’ scrum culture.
Bristol bring more than a passport and ambition
The Bears arrive with a reputation for attacking width and dangerous breakdown work. Their victory at Loftus Versfeld last season demonstrated their ability to thrive in South African conditions, and Dobson expects another formidable examination.
“They’re a team that can turn it on,” he warned. “When they click and get going, they’re as good as any team in this competition.”
Dobson also praised Bristol’s powerful maul, describing it as the best in the English Premiership at present, while warning that their organised attack and increased defensive aggression demand complete concentration.
Nel agrees that patience will be vital against a team capable of stretching defensive systems until gaps appear.
“They’ve got a really wide attack,” the captain explained. “For us, it’s probably just staying patient, staying within the system, actually letting the system bail you out instead of making individual massive plays.”
Eighty minutes means eighty minutes
The revised Champions Cup bonus-point system adds another tactical wrinkle: teams must finish at least three tries ahead of their opponents to secure the bonus point.
Nel said the change places a premium on defensive accuracy throughout the match, even when victory appears secure.
The Stormers captain also believes last weekend’s performance demonstrated progress without suggesting the team has reached its ceiling.
“We definitely made a statement,” Nel said, while acknowledging missed opportunities and room for greater attacking precision.
Dobson wants his side to collect maximum value from home fixtures, pointing to last season’s experience as evidence that pool-phase points can determine playoff positioning.
“We cannot lose a Champions Cup game at home and expect to host anything later,” he said.
The Stormers will need their forward pack to lay a solid platform, their backs to exploit space and their defence to keep Bristol’s expansive attack on a short leash.
Dayimani’s absence removes a proven try-scoring weapon. Roos now has the opportunity to bring his own thunder to the occasion.
With the DHL Stadium crowd ready to raise the roof, the Stormers must ensure their European ambitions do not come unstuck before the journey has properly begun.
