Aphelele Fassi heads to Japan for career-defining challenge

Aphelele Fassi has built a reputation for turning half chances into headline moments. Now the Springbok fullback is preparing for another defining chapter after confirming he will join Japanese Rugby League One club Toshiba Brave Lupus for the 2026/27 season.

The move will follow the completion of his Springbok commitments later this year and forms part of his recently renewed contract with the Sharks, ensuring the 28-year-old returns to Kings Park in July 2027.

For a player who has progressed through the Sharks’ junior ranks into one of South Africa’s premier attacking threats, the opportunity represents more than a change of scenery. It is a calculated step towards broadening his rugby education while embracing a new culture.

“This is a unique opportunity to experience a new culture, embrace a different way of life, and challenge myself both on and off the field,” said Fassi.

“I’ve always believed that the best experiences come from stepping outside your comfort zone, and I’m looking forward to immersing myself in everything that Japan has to offer.”

Japan has become fertile ground for elite international players seeking to refine their game, and Toshiba Brave Lupus have secured a backline spark capable of igniting matches with breathtaking pace, elusive footwork and instinctive vision. Like a fullback timing the perfect counterattack, Fassi has recognised open space where opportunity awaits.

The Durban-born star is equally eager to connect with his new supporters.

“Toshiba is a club with a proud history and passionate supporters, and it’s a privilege to become part of that,” he said.

“I can’t wait to meet the fans, build relationships within the community, and hopefully give them plenty to cheer about. Their passion is a huge part of what makes rugby so special, and I’m excited to experience that firsthand.”

His ambitions on the field remain equally clear.

“On the field, my focus is simple: to work hard every day, contribute to the team’s success in any way I can, and help the club compete for championships. I’ll be giving everything I have for the jersey and look forward to learning from my teammates and coaches along the way.”

The Sharks have endorsed the sabbatical, recognising the long-term value of exposing one of their brightest talents to a world-class rugby environment before welcoming him home for the 2027 season.

Matt Norton, Head of Rugby at Roc Nation Sports International, described the move as “a fantastic milestone for Aphelele as he enters the prime of his career.”

“Aligning this Japanese sabbatical with his long-term future at the Sharks gives him the perfect platform to test himself in a world-class environment, experience a brilliant new culture, and return to South Africa an even more complete player.”

Facilitated by Roc Nation Sports International through its partnership with In Touch Sports, the move resembles a perfectly weighted cross-field kick, carrying Fassi towards fresh horizons while ensuring his rugby story in Durban is far from its final whistle.
