Dobson rues shocking Stormers’ blunt edge after Cardiff ambush in Wales

The DHL Stormers arrived in Cardiff with the scent of a home playoff route in their nostrils. They left the Arms Park battered, frustrated and searching for answers after a 22-16 United Rugby Championship defeat to a Cardiff side that tackled like men defending a castle wall in a thunderstorm.

Coach John Dobson did not hide his disappointment after watching his side’s European tour end without a victory following last week’s 38-38 draw.

“A very disappointing performance,” Dobson admitted.

The Stormers fired the opening shot through lock Adré Smith after early scrum dominance earned repeated penalties and a yellow card for Cardiff captain Liam Belcher. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu converted and later added three penalties, but the visitors gradually lost control as Cardiff turned the contest into a street fight.

Cardiff struck back through two tries from Jacob Beetham and further scores by Tom Bowen and Ioan Lloyd.

Dobson praised the Welsh side’s hunger and accuracy.

“You have to give Cardiff quite a lot of credit. That’s very desperate side,” he said. “I’m sorry that their desperation meant more to them than our chance to host the playoffs in Cape Town.”

The Stormers repeatedly marched into promising territory only to spill opportunities like water through open fingers. Their attack lacked its usual spark and their finishing carried the sharpness of a blunted blade.

“They were, you know, their defence, their attack was very good. Put us under pressure defensively, got yards on us. Pretty clever attack,” Dobson said.

“I know we had lots of areas of dominance and lots of opportunities probably wasted. So it was similar to last week here, a failure to convert 25 metres out.”

Dobson also voiced concern over recurring issues in execution and discipline.

“The fact that we didn’t get behaviour change, there is a problem for us. We’re going to have to regroup.”

The defeat leaves the Stormers vulnerable to slipping further down the URC standings ahead of the quarter-finals. Dobson, though, backed his squad to recover before the knockout phase arrives like a tidal wave on the Cape coastline.

“We know what’s in this group and we’ll rebuild, we’ll regroup quickly,” he said.

“We’re a very bruised team, probably beaten by the better team on the night, and we’ve got to get everything much better than this in the quarter-final.”
