Siya Kolisi took ‘massive pay cut” to rejoin Stormers

The return of Siya Kolisi to the Stormers is shaping up as a homecoming driven by passion rather than profit, with director of rugby John Dobson revealing the Springbok captain accepted a massive pay cut to rejoin the Cape franchise next season.

Kolisi’s move back to Cape Town has rippled through South African rugby like a perfectly timed counterattack splitting a defensive line wide open. Yet Dobson made it clear the iconic loose forward is not arriving as a guaranteed starter or a marquee signing chasing one final contract.

Speaking during a Stormers TV Q&A on YouTube ahead of Friday night’s Vodacom URC clash against Ulster Rugby in Belfast, Dobson painted a picture of a player whose compass is pointed firmly toward legacy and mentorship.

“Siya was desperate to come back and made a massive financial sacrifice to be here,” Dobson said.

“That gesture is appreciated. He said all I want to do is play for the Stormers and come back to Cape Town. When you have a Springbok captain who has made a great contribution to the country, make that gesture; it would be unfair to him to reveal the numbers, but that showed where his heart is. There is not one element of financial gain.”

Kolisi’s influence, much like a dominant No 8 carrying defenders over the gainline, stretches beyond the field. Dobson believes the emotional response from Cape Town supporters reflects the magnetic pull the double World Cup-winning captain still carries.

“The reaction to his announcement just shows what it means to the people of Cape Town. He has this presence in a room. Siya told us he is not here to take the place of Paul de Villiers or for a pay cheque. He wants to help bring youngsters through and when he is needed by the Stormers, he will put his body on the line as he does for the Springboks.”

The message from the Stormers camp is clear. Kolisi’s return is not a ceremonial lap around familiar turf. It is a calculated play to strengthen the culture, sharpen the edge of the squad and help guide the next generation through rugby’s unforgiving trenches.
