CAPE TOWN – Stellenbosch FC claimed a 2-1 victory over Chippa United in their Betway Premiership clash at Athlone Stadium, boosting their position in the standings.
The hosts from the Cape Winelands made a strong statement in the first half, with striker Tshegofatso Mabasa proving decisive in front of goal. He opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a clinical finish before doubling the advantage just three minutes later, giving Stellenbosch firm control of the encounter.
Chippa United, travelling from Gqeberha, struggled to contain the early attacking pressure but gradually grew into the game as the half progressed.
After the break, the visitors showed greater intent and pushed forward in search of a way back into the match. Their efforts were eventually rewarded in the 80th minute when Sinoxolo Kwayiba found the back of the net to reduce the deficit and set up a tense finish.
Stellenbosch were forced to dig deep in the closing stages, particularly after Wonderboy Makhubu received a red card in the 90th minute, leaving the home side a man down. Despite late pressure from Chippa, Gavin Hunt’s side held their composure to secure all three points.
Earned and deserved.
