CAPE TOWN – Bafana Bafana opened their CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying campaign with a hard-earned 2-1 victory over Guinea at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, giving Pitso Mosimane a winning start in his return as the national team’s head coach.
South Africa took the lead in the 30th minute when defender Ime Okon found the back of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage heading into the break.
Guinea responded after half-time, with Seydouba Cisse equalising in the 69th minute to put the visitors back on level terms.
Bafana, however, refused to settle for a draw and regained the lead eight minutes later when Samkelo Kabini scored in the 77th minute to restore South Africa’s advantage.
The hosts held firm during the closing stages to secure all three points and begin their Group D campaign on a positive note. The victory also marked the first competitive match of Mosimane’s latest tenure, following his appointment earlier this month.
South Africa will now turn their attention to their next Group D qualifier against Eritrea in Cairo on 30 September.
The result leaves Bafana Bafana at the top of Group D after the opening round of fixtures.
