The aQuellé Midmar Mile, usually alive with the rhythmic splash of thousands cutting through water like migrating shoals, was today marked by a solemn stillness after organisers confirmed the tragic passing of a 63-year-old female participant following a medical emergency during the event.
According to organisers, the swimmer experienced medical distress while in the water. Like a sudden change in current beneath a calm surface, fellow swimmers quickly noticed signs of difficulty and immediately alerted rescue and safety personnel stationed at Midmar Dam.
Emergency responders reached the swimmer without delay. She was found to be in full cardiac arrest, and CPR was initiated in the water before she was carefully guided to shore. ER24 medics and on-site doctors continued resuscitation efforts, working against the clock with the urgency of lifeguards racing an incoming tide.
Despite sustained medical intervention at the venue, the swimmer remained in cardiac arrest and was transported to Life Hilton Hospital. Tragically, further resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful, and she was later pronounced deceased.
Organisers emphasised that participant safety remains the event’s highest priority. The aQuellé Midmar Mile’s comprehensive water safety and medical response teams were activated instantly, operating precisely according to established emergency protocols. It’s a system designed to respond like a well-drilled relay when every second matters.
“The loss of a swimmer is deeply felt across the Midmar Mile family,” organisers said in a statement.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the swimmer’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
Out of respect for the family’s privacy, no further personal details will be released.
The aQuellé Midmar Mile community, swimmers, volunteers, safety personnel and supporters alike stands united in compassion and support, as gentle ripples of remembrance spread across the water that so many hold dear.
