The Running Mann set to join Two Oceans Marathon NPC

The winds of change are blowing through the world of South African road running, as the Two Oceans Marathon NPC ushers in a new chapter with the appointment of several new board members.

The latest developments sent ripples through the athletics world and raised critical questions about transparency, leadership, and the very soul of one of South Africa’s most cherished races.

Among them is Stuart Mann, widely known in running circles for his blog The Running Mann. He joins Glenn Muller, Craig February (existing member), and Krishnakumar Patel as the latest nominees put forward by the Celtic Harriers Club.

Celtic Harriers and Western Province Athletics (WPA) are the founding members of Two Oceans Marathon NPC.

They expressed confidence in the fresh faces on the board and their ability to guide the event into a renewed phase of growth and collaboration.

“We firmly believe that these appointments will strengthen the Board’s effectiveness and make a meaningful contribution during this important phase of organisational renewal,” said Myron Jardien, Chairperson of Celtic Harriers Club.

Mann’s appointment comes shortly after a legal matter involving current board chairperson Toni Cavanagh. Cavanagh had approached the Gauteng High Court regarding blog posts in which Mann raised questions about aspects of the Two Oceans Marathon, including logistical challenges at the 2025 race. The court did not grant her the urgent relief she requested, and Mann maintained that his writings were fair and lawful.

Known for his passion for the sport and deep interest in the running community, Mann has used his platform to discuss a variety of controversial issues affecting races such as the Comrades and Two Oceans. While some of his commentary sparked debate, it has also opened the door for more public dialogue about transparency and improvement in the sport.

With fresh leadership and renewed focus, both Celtic Harriers and WPA are optimistic about the future. They have reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with the new board and all stakeholders to ensure that the 2026 edition of the Two Oceans Marathon is one to remember—for all the right reasons.

“We acknowledge the challenges experienced during the 2025 edition of the race,” read the joint statement from WPA and Celtic Harriers.

“Together, we remain committed to restoring confidence and ensuring a safe, inclusive, and memorable event for all participants.”

WPA has also nominated members to the new board, with respected names like Achmat Jacobs, Chris Goldschmidt and Julius Oosthuizen reportedly among them. Their experience and insight are expected to add strength and continuity to the team.

The Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon has long been one of South Africa’s premier running events. It’s a celebration of endurance, community, and natural beauty.

With a refreshed board and a clear commitment to progress, hopes are high that the journey ahead will be marked by unity, resilience, and renewed trust in the road ahead.
