Sacha, Senatla injury blows for Stormers ahead of Leinster URC semi

The DHL Stormers stormed into the United Rugby Championship semi-finals on Saturday, brushing Cardiff aside 44-21 at DHL Stadium with the force of a Cape winter cold front rolling in from Table Bay.

The scoreboard smiled broadly on the hosts, the crowd rode every wave of momentum, and the Stormers’ attack crackled with electricity.

Yet beneath the celebratory noise, an unwelcome guest quietly entered the dressing room.

Injury.

And it arrived carrying a hefty bill.

The biggest concern surrounds Springbok playmaker Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, whose dazzling performance ended in agony shortly after he crossed for the Stormers’ fourth try.

The gifted flyhalf, a player capable of unlocking defences with the ease of a master locksmith, limped from the field shortly before the hour mark after suffering what appears to be a serious ankle syndesmosis injury.

Stormers coach John Dobson did little to soften the concern.

“It looks pretty serious, to be honest,” said Dobson.

“They’re obviously going for a scan, but the doctor has given me his view, and it’s a proper ankle ligament injury.

“He was cramping a bit before then, and then Ioan Lloyd got him from behind.”

Should the diagnosis prove as severe as feared, the injury could keep Feinberg-Mngomezulu sidelined for months, placing a cloud over both the Stormers’ title ambitions and the opening chapters of the Springboks’ international campaign.

The timing could scarcely be crueller. Leinster await in Dublin, where victories are harvested less like fruit and more like precious diamonds extracted from unforgiving rock.

Yet Dobson believes the Stormers possess the grit to keep marching.

“It’s a big blow, but we’re going to be OK,” he said.

“Jurie Matthee is doing really well in the team.

“You always have blows, but we always sort of get together, gel together and fight, so I think we’re going to be OK.”

Those words reflect a defining trait of this Stormers side. They are not without scars. They are not without setbacks. They are certainly not short on character.

Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s injury was merely the largest crack in a growing casualty list.

Speedster Seabelo Senatla has already been ruled out after suffering a concussion during the quarter-final.

“Senatla is a Criteria One, so he was knocked out and won’t play next week,” Dobson confirmed.

The coach reserved special praise for the winger whose return carried the energy of a man making up for lost time.

“I thought he was absolutely magnificent. For a guy who’s been out for so long, he was imperious in the air, on defence and with his work rate. It’s a hell of an effort.”

Lock Ruben van Heerden departed at half-time for a head injury assessment, while centre Dan du Plessis left the encounter nursing a knee injury.

“It was an expensive game,” Dobson admitted.

That simple sentence may prove the most revealing of all.

The Stormers will depart Cape Town carrying a semi-final ticket in one hand and a medical report in the other. The victory glittered like silverware in the sunshine. The injury list lurked like a loose forward at a breakdown, waiting to pounce.

Dublin now beckons.

Leinster stand between the Stormers and another URC final. Yet before attention turns fully to Irish giants and knockout rugby, scans, assessments and recovery rooms have become the unexpected centre stage.

For all the hard work of the quarter-final triumph, the injury ward may yet become the most influential selection meeting of the season.
