The road ahead in the Mother City promises to hum with pace and possibility as Kenya’s Faith Cherono prepares to chase the clock at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on Sunday, 10 May 2026. Like a runner leaning into a tailwind, she arrives with intent, ready to stretch beyond comfort in pursuit of a personal best and a slice of history.
Cherono’s return to South African soil follows a confident debut at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K in March, where she surged to second place in 30:44, the second fastest time of her career. The race left more than numbers in its wake.
“It was a good experience and a nice event,” she reflected. “I was happy to join South African athletes and also athletes from all around the world. I felt at home – welcomed, supported.”
That sense of belonging translated into rhythm on the road, her stride flowing as smoothly as a peloton finding its groove. Now, with Cape Town’s flat, fast route stretching out like an open invitation, Cherono is ready to raise the tempo.
Her preparations have followed a steady cadence.
“Training is going well. No issues. I am motivated and building one brick at the time. I will miss Brenda, who is very strong. So I hope to have other strong competitors to help and share the load.”
The absence of compatriot and training partner Brenda Jepchirchir shifts the dynamic, placing Cherono closer to the front of the pack where decisions are made and risks are taken. In a field expected to feature both international firepower and local strength, the race could unfold like a tactical chess match played at blistering speed.
Cherono’s ambitions stretch beyond podium positions. They are anchored in the clock.
“I am aiming to run a PB and will do my best to push to the limit. I am more interested in running a fast time than trying to win the race or make the podium. My plan is to focus on the time and I’m willing to take the risk.”
If conditions align, that risk could carry her past her 30:06 lifetime best, into territory that would rewrite the South African All-Comers record and potentially mark the first sub-30-minute women’s 10km performance on African soil.

Race founder Michael Meyer believes her presence elevates the contest.
“We are excited to welcome Faith Cherono to the start line of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K. Her entry adds real depth and international quality to the women’s field and further strengthens what is shaping up to be a world-class race in the Mother City. Cape Town continues to attract some of the finest road runners in the world, and Faith’s participation is a clear reflection of the event’s growing global stature.”
On 10 May, the streets from Milnerton to the city centre will become a ribbon of opportunity. For Cherono, every kilometre offers a chance to turn ambition into acceleration and to chase history stride for stride.
