CAPE TOWN – Mamelodi Sundowns and Sasol Banyana Banyana star Bambanani Mbane celebrated a special milestone after earning her 100th international cap in a 1-0 victory over Algeria in an international friendly at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu on Tuesday.
Her journey to this achievement has been anything but easy, having faced criticism early in her career.
“One of the biggest challenges I faced was being judged for playing what was seen as a man’s sport. In my village, there were no other girls playing football, so I was often criticized for playing with boys,” said Mbane.
Now a key figure in both club and country, her calm and composed approach continues to define her game.
“I believe my style of play fits well into the Mamelodi Sundowns’ system because the build-up usually starts from the back. We focus on building from defense, which requires players to be calm and comfortable on the ball,” she said.
She also reflected on overcoming a serious injury setback.
“Honestly, it was draining, but I’m grateful that I had a strong support system. My wife took care of me, and although it was hard, having someone by my side made a big difference. I was also motivated by the desire to come back stronger.”
With the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on the horizon, she believes the extended preparation period will benefit the team.
“Yes, it gives us more time to prepare and a chance to work on ourselves individually as players,” added Mbane.

Reaching 100 caps is a moment of pride for the Sterkspruit born: “My biggest achievement was being part of the team that won WAFCON 2022. Reaching 100 national team caps will also be incredibly special to me.”
She also credited her partnership with her sponsor, adding: “I play in the Puma Ultra boots because they are lightweight and comfortable – Puma is no longer just a sponsor to me; it’s family.”
