Arthur Jantjies announced himself on the big stage with a stunning victory in the men’s 56km race at the 2026 Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon powered by BYD on Saturday.
The 25-year-old from Hopetown in the Northern Cape outclassed a deep elite field, timing his charge to perfection to win in 3:09:25 at the University of Cape Town Rugby Fields. It marked a breakthrough triumph that added a new name to the race’s honour roll.
Pre-race favourite Onnalena Khonkhobe, the 2024 champion, settled for second in 3:10:00, while Blessing Waison completed the podium in 3:11:13.
“It’s been phenomenal. Hopetown in the Northern Cape is now firmly on the map,” an elated Jantjies said after the finish.
Jantjies credited his coach, John Hamlet, for a carefully executed race plan.
“I have huge respect for him. Whatever he asks me to do, I do without question. My coach says we must play small, fly under the radar and deliver on race day,” he said.
A high-altitude training block in Dullstroom proved decisive.
“He prepared me well at the training camp in Dullstroom. It was tough and there were moments I felt overcooked, but the hard work paid off.”
Jantjies also drew inspiration from women’s ultra winner Gerda Steyn, who shared parts of the build-up.
“We had a few training runs together which was very inspiring. It was special that she came to congratulate me.”
The race unfolded at a controlled tempo over the opening stages, with the lead pack running shoulder to shoulder as contenders conserved energy along the testing coastal route.
Jantjies stayed composed, tracking Khonkhobe deep into the race as the pair matched each other stride for stride heading towards the closing kilometres.
The decisive moment came late.
Jantjies unleashed a sharp surge in the final stretch, breaking clear with authority. Khonkhobe had no answer as the Northern Cape runner powered to the line to seal a memorable win.
Behind the leading trio, the battle for positions remained tight. Dennis Kipkosgei finished fourth in 3:11:29, followed by Tumelo Moja in 3:12:07.
Sphamandla Nkosi and Siboniso Sikhakhane shared sixth place in identical times of 3:12:42, underlining the fine margins at the sharp end of ultra-distance racing.
Malixole Kalideni (3:12:49), Mphatso Nadolo (3:13:16) and Msawenkosi Mthalane (3:13:32) completed the top 10.
On a course famed for its beauty and brutality, Jantjies delivered a performance defined by patience and precision, confirming that in ultra-distance racing, timing and nerve often outweigh reputation.
