CAPE TOWN – Hugo Broos is expecting a renewed sense of purpose from Bafana Bafana as they prepare to face Panama national football team in two upcoming international friendlies on home soil.
South Africa will host the first encounter at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday, 27 March, before travelling to DHL Stadium in Cape Town for the second clash on Tuesday, 31 March 2026.
Speaking ahead of the fixtures, Broos admitted there is a fresh sense of motivation within the squad following a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations campaign.
“Very exciting to see the boys back. It’s been a few months,” said Broos. “The AFCON was disappointing for every one of us, but I think everyone is motivated again to do what we have done over the last three years – that is good performances and good results.”
The Belgian mentor also confirmed that the squad was not yet at full strength, with several Mamelodi Sundowns players only rejoining camp after recent continental commitments.
“The group is still not complete because of the Sundowns players,” he explained. “They only returned today. From my side, it was not the best idea to call them immediately to camp. They deserve a few hours with their families after a tough trip and match.”
Broos expects the full squad to assemble shortly, with the players set to report for duty the following morning.
Looking ahead to the opposition, Broos believes Panama will provide the ideal test for his side, especially with one eye on future global competitions.
“Panama are ranked 30 places higher than us – that already says something,” he noted. “They are a Central American team, with a similar style to Mexico, who will be one of our opponents at the World Cup.”
While results will always matter, Broos emphasised the importance of learning and preparation.
“It was the right choice to play Panama,” he said. “We can learn a lot about that style of football. The result is not the most important thing, even though it still matters.”
