The DHL Stormers claimed a valuable 29–21 bonus-point victory over the Dragons in their United Rugby Championship clash at DHL Stadium in Cape Town on Sunday, although the contest unfolded more like a bruising arm wrestle than a flowing spectacle.
The Welsh visitors arrived with grit and stubborn intent. They slowed possession, battled fiercely at the breakdown and forced the home side into an error-strewn contest that never allowed the Stormers to fully stretch their attacking stride.
The breakthrough arrived in the ninth minute through the electric feet of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu. The young flyhalf sliced through the defensive line like a runner finding daylight on the outside lane before gliding over for the opening try.
Seven minutes later he struck again. Feinberg-Mngomezulu linked smoothly with former Bishops schoolmate Imad Khan, the pair carving open space before the flyhalf finished the movement. He converted both tries to hand the Stormers a 14–0 lead.
The Dragons refused to fade. Lock Seb Davies stormed through a gap in midfield after a sharp lineout platform, powering over for their opening score. Captain Angus O’Brien added the conversion to trim the deficit to 14–7 at halftime.
Moments before the break the visitors nearly struck again when Rio Dyer produced a dazzling run along the left touchline, dribbling ahead and regathering before sending Rhodri Williams racing toward the posts. Feinberg-Mngomezulu raced back with a desperate tackle beneath the uprights to prevent a certain try.
The Stormers nudged the scoreboard forward early in the second half when Feinberg-Mngomezulu slotted a penalty.

Their powerful scrum then roared into life. With the Dragons pack driven backwards on their own ball, eighthman Evan Roos thundered over in the 49th minute to stretch the lead to 24–7.
The Dragons again answered through relentless forward pressure. Flanker Thomas Young burrowed low after a series of pick-and-go phases to bring the visitors back into the contest.
The Stormers secured breathing space when replacement Wandisile Simelane produced a moment of flair. The outside back chipped ahead, gathered the bouncing ball and dotted down for the bonus-point try.
The visitors threatened again when Dyer dived on a loose ball near the line, although the TMO ruled that he and Feinberg-Mngomezulu grounded the ball simultaneously, which meant the try could not stand.
Dragons winger Dyer eventually crossed to narrow the gap, although the Stormers managed the closing stages to secure the win.
Veteran flanker Deon Fourie, the oldest player on the field at 39, earned the man-of-the-match award after a tireless shift.
“Our win last week against the Bulls at Loftus was quite tough,” said Fourie. “I felt awesome today and I was glad I could play a bit longer. We shot ourselves in the foot with errors.”
“It’s a short turnaround. We have lots to work on before next week against Edinburgh.”
Stormers captain Ruhan Nel acknowledged the challenge posed by the Welsh side.
“The Dragons are a quality team. We knew they had nothing to lose, which makes them dangerous. We will take an ugly win instead of a beautiful one any day of the week.”
