Cape Town – What started as a small community of cycling enthusiasts with a love for the open road has turned into a powerhouse of endurance and excellence.
Founded by Tahier Phillips and Ziyaad Geyer over tea and koesisters; this is the story to this year’s Double Century podium.
Star Team Cycling Club has made history in its 20th anniversary year by achieving a podium finish at the prestigious Old Mutual Wealth Double Century, held on 23 November 2024.
The Old Mutual Wealth Double Century is a grueling 202-kilometer team time trial that tests not just physical endurance, but also teamwork and strategy.
Set against the scenic but challenging backdrop of the Overberg region, it is widely regarded as one of South Africa’s toughest cycling events.
This year’s edition saw Star Team Cycling Club rise to the occasion with three teams taking on the challenge.
“This is beyond anything we imagined when we started 20 years ago,” said Phillips, Chairman of Star Team Cycling Club.
“From social rides in our neighbourhoods to
competing in one of the most demanding races in the country, this is a true testament to the power of a united community.”
Three Teams, Three Wins for the Club
While the sponsored elite team earned a podium finish with an impressive time of 4 hours, 54 minutes, and 23 seconds, the other teams also shone brightly.
Team 2, led by the inspirational Captain Imran Hassen, achieved the much-celebrated sub-six-hour finish, a feat that many riders dream of.
Meanwhile, Team 3 showcased their unwavering spirit, with vice Captain Gameed Salie leading the charge alongside Team Secretary Arshad Kelly, who courageously took on the race on a tandem with his
wife.
Their incredible teamwork and determination were a highlight of the event, demonstrating that cycling is not just about speed but also about heart and unity.
Much of the pro team’s success is owed to the
strategic vision of Yusr Bassadien, who was
instrumental in recruiting a team to ride under the Stars banner.
His efforts brought together a group of top-tier riders whose remarkable performance elevated the club to a new level of competitive excellence.
“Yusr commitment and passion for growing the club were key to this achievement,” said Phillips.
“He showed that when we dream big and work smart, anything is possible.”
Behind the scenes, the tireless efforts of Rifaed Sambo, the club’s Treasurer, ensured that all three teams were fully prepared for the challenge.
“Rifaed is the glue that holds everything together,” added Phillips.
“Without his late nights and hard work, this level of success would not have been possible.”
Reflecting on the race, Captain Imran Hassen shared, “For Team 2, this wasn’t just about the race — it was about pushing our limits and working together.
“Achieving a sub-six finish is something we’ll cherish forever. It’s proof that when we ride for each other, incredible things happen.”
A Beacon for the Future
This victory isn’t just about medals or finish times; it’s about what Star Team Cycling Club represents.
For 20 years, the club has fostered camaraderie, fitness, and a spirit of togetherness, rooted in Islamic values.
Now, the club is setting its sights on inspiring
the next generation of cyclists.
“This achievement is a beacon of hope,” said Shaheen Philander, Public Relations and Media Representative for the club.
“It shows that a small club with big dreams can stand alongside the best. Going forward, we’re committed to youth development—nurturing talent, instilling values, and building a future where even greater
things are possible.”
A Journey Built on Community
“Star Team Cycling Club is more than just a group of cyclists. The club’s weekly rides are a blend of hard efforts on the bike and warm conversations over juicy koeksisters post-ride—a unique combination that embodies the club’s heart and soul.
“We’re not just building cyclists; we’re building a community,” added Philips.
From humble beginnings to the national stage, Star Team Cycling Club has proven that the power of community and shared vision can achieve the extraordinary.
Whether it’s racing through the Overberg or sharing a laugh over tea and treats, Star Team is a shining example of what’s possible when people come together.
