DHL STADIUM – Bafana Bafana maintained their winning streak to conclude their African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers in style when they defeated South Sudan 3-0 to finish top of Group K.
Two first half goals and one in the second stanza sank South Sudan as the home side roared in front of a packed sold out DHL Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The game saw Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams playing his 50th match for the national team. It didn’t take long for the hosts to mark their territory as striker Iqraam Rayners found the back of the net 7 minutes, after a good skilful cross from winger Oswin Appollis.
Hugo Broos’ charges were in control of the ball after the 1-0 lead gave them confidence.
At 21 minutes, South Africa gave the crowd a much needed boost as Patrick Maswanganyi netted Bafana Bafana’s second goal to make it 2-0. A long range shot from Teboho Mokoena saw South Sudan’s goalkeeper Majak Mawith fumble the ball to set up for Maswanganyi.
South Africa enjoyed bossing the East African country going to the end of the first half with a 2-0 lead.
Things did not change as the second half kicked off. South Africa continued where they left off in the first half, Mokoena converted from the penalty spot to extend the lead to 3-0 in 50 minutes after Thapelo Morena fouled in the box.
In the 74th minute, Sage Stephens made his national team debut as he was among four substitutes making his way in place of the half centurion Williams.
