CAPE TOWN – Kaizer Chiefs Interim Coach Cavin Johnson has defended himself after the Naturena based side failed to qualify for the MTN8 campaign.
Amakhosi continued to have the worst run this season where they finished the season in tenth position after suffering 12 losses in the DStv Premiership, winning just nine games.
In October last year, Chiefs appointed Johnson who joined them as head of the Youth Development Academy, to take over as the first team coach after sacking Molefi Ntseki.
Johnson believes Chiefs had so many opportunities to finish the season on a high but they never take the chances available in front of them.
“When I took over, we were where we are now, maybe a little bit better, but we improved and we had momentum going and then somewhere along the line we slipped,” said Johnson.
“Every time we get to this position, we don’t make it to the next level and that was concerning for me.
“We tried our utmost best, and I think that’s what I’m most proud of. If you remember, there was a time if I won the game, we would have gone second.
“There was a time if I won the game, we would have stayed third or something like that, but we didn’t.”
