CAPE TOWN – Stellenbosch FC have become the latest team in the DStv Premiership to launch a women’s soccer team.
The Cape Winelands based side has purchased the franchise of Stellenbosch University.
As part of the agreement, the two entities have formed a unique collaboration aimed at advancing the development of women’s football in Stellenbosch and the wider Cape Winelands community.
The Stellies ladies team will compete in the SASOL Women’s League, and will be headed by Nathan Peskin as head coach as they go into their first-ever fixture this weekend when they take on Badgers Academy FC in the opening match of Stream B.
“Core to our Club’s vision is to build a sustainable football pathway for the region and to be a catalyst for social upliftment,” said Rob Benadie Stellenbosch FC CEO.
“We want to see the females in our catchment area provided the same opportunities as the males to play and compete at the highest levels of football in South Africa.
“The decision to establish a women’s team alongside Stellenbosch University is the latest step towards accomplishing that vision and is one that we are excited to see come to fruition.”
