Cape Town – Cape Town Spurs coach Shaun Bartlett has admitted emotions are high in the camp ahead of the opening DStv Premiership this weekend.
The Urban Warriors will be making their much anticipated comeback to the top flight football following their five year absence.
Spurs will be travelling to Mpumalanga on Sunday to face TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium.
The Cape-based side was relegated back in 2018, at the time the team was known as Ajax Cape Town.
Bartlett says it’s a bit emotional for the team ahead of this weekend’s match but admits the team is ready.
“Bit of emotions and nerves coming and excited at the same time, as the time gets closer to the 6 of August. But we are well prepared and we had a good pre-season over four weeks and I think that was enough,” said Bartlett.
“We played a lot of training matches in order to prepare the players, I think minutes under the belt are always important because that is what you are going to do.
“And there’s nothing easier about this level, it’s obviously a level higher – you have to make sure that our players are prepared to compete against Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns and whichever team we come up with.”
Bartlett is confident that playing in the Motsepe Foundation Championship for five years has taught the club a few lessons.
He says the team belongs to the top and will do all it can to make sure it doesn’t go back to the lower division.
“We will prove people wrong on the field with all our performances and the results. I don’t like predictions, I don’t like to say what’s going to happen,” he said.
“I don’t know if I am going to live until 60, you’ve got 24 hours – and that is what life and football are about.
“You have to live in a moment and make the best of that and impact as many lives as possible.”
