CAPE TOWN – The Springbok Women’s Sevens were not going to let the Stellenbosch rain ruin their chances on day one of the World Rugby’s Sevens Challenger Series.
Knowing what it means to win the tournament on home soil, the South African side started the day well at Markötter Stadium on Thursday.
In the first match, Renfred Dazel’s side met with the Czech Republic 7s, the game ended with a 7-7 draw before meeting the tough Mexico 7s . The home side easily defeated the North American side 36 nil.
Coach Dazel believes even though day one went well but there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done.
“I am very happy with what we’ve achieved today, we have played well but I am disappointed with the results of the match – I believe we could’ve done better,” said Dazel.
“Obviously we look at the weather and it’s 50/50 when we play a game in these conditions – can’t fault no one. But I think for us as a team we at times didn’t play according to our standards.
“In the game against Mexico, there was more energy, intensity and more of a structured plan that made us cruise from the first minute.”
Day two of the Challenger Series will see the Springbok Women’s Sevens will face Madagascar on Friday in their last Pool E match.
