Men in Black, a Spring in His Step: Nel Salutes Krige and Senatla’s Paulse-Inspired Acrobatics

CAPE TOWN: The Stormers brought the thunder, Corne Krige brought the history, and Seabelo Senatla supplied the somersaulting spectacle as Cape Town’s rugby revolutionaries raced to a commanding 39-22 United Rugby Championship coastal derby victory over the Sharks at DHL Stadium.

Stormers captain Ruhan Nel reflected on the significance of former skipper Krige handing out the team’s Men in Black jerseys before kick-off, a symbolic passing of the torch that connected the current crop of Cape champions with the hard-nosed warriors who helped shape the franchise’s identity.

Krige’s presence added a hefty dose of history to the occasion. The former Springbok captain knows the weight of the jersey, the price of leadership and the pride that comes with representing the Stormers.

For Nel and his teammates, receiving the famous black shirts was a reminder that the badge carries generations of sweat, sacrifice and Cape Town swagger. It was the sort of pre-match inspiration that can put an extra spring in a player’s step before the starting gun fires.

Then Senatla took centre stage.

After crossing for the Stormers’ opening try, the electrifying winger launched into a flick-flack celebration that echoed the acrobatic trademark of former Stormers wing Breyton Paulse.

It was a spectacular flourish, with Senatla turning the try line into his own gymnastics arena and giving the DHL Stadium faithful another reason to raise the roof.

In a contest where momentum can swing like a runner’s stride in the final kilometre, the opening score gave the Stormers an early injection of confidence. Senatla’s airborne antics added theatre to the occasion, while the home side’s attacking intent ensured the Sharks faced a relentless uphill climb.

The 39-22 scoreline reflected a Stormers performance that combined attacking ambition with the ruthless finishing required to win a derby. For the Sharks, the afternoon became a stern reminder that visiting Cape Town can feel like running into a headwind with the finish line moving further away.

For Nel, the jersey ceremony and Senatla’s celebration captured two sides of Stormers rugby: respect for the legacy and the freedom to create new memories.

Krige represented the foundations. Senatla delivered the fireworks.

And the Stormers, with their captain leading the charge, gave their supporters a 39-22 result worth celebrating long after the final whistle.
