CAPE TOWN – Mamelodi Sundowns strengthened their position at the top of the Betway Premiership standings after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Golden Arrows at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium in Durban on Sunday.
Sundowns took the lead in the 14th minute when Siyanda Ndlovu found the back of the net, giving the log leaders an early advantage. Arrows responded after the break, with Junior Dion levelling matters in the 76th minute to set up a tense finish.
However, Sundowns produced a late winner as Teboho Mokoena struck in the 88th minute to secure all three points and extend their lead at the summit.
The victory takes Sundowns to 16 points, keeping them firmly in control at the top of the table as the title race begins to take shape.
At Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto, Kaizer Chiefs claimed a thrilling 3-2 victory over Siwelele FC in another five-goal encounter.
The Amakhosi found the breakthrough through Mfundo Vilakazi before Wandile Duba added another to put Chiefs in a commanding position. Samukelo Xulu’s own goal further boosted the home side as Chiefs moved into a strong position.
Siwelele refused to go down without a fight, however, with Aphiwe Baliti and Michael N’Guessan finding the net to keep the visitors within touching distance. Chiefs ultimately held on to claim a valuable three points.
The victory moved Amakhosi to 11 points, strengthening their position among the leading sides in the early Premiership standings.
Saturday’s action produced two goalless draws, with Sekhukhune United and TS Galaxy playing to a 0-0 stalemate, while Chippa United and Milford FC also shared the spoils after failing to find the back of the net.
The weekend results leave Sundowns at the summit on 16 points, followed by defending champions Orlando Pirates on 13 points, while Kaizer Chiefs sit third on 11 points.
