Boxer Super Run Durban puts runners in the driving seat

The starting gun at the Boxer Super Run Durban will sound like a starter pistol for four very different running stories when the 5km road race celebrates its fourth anniversary on Sunday, 18 October.

And the beauty of this 5km carnival is that runners get to choose their own adventure.

With four dedicated waves, the event puts the runner firmly in the driving seat. The Open Wave is the place for clock-watchers, club runners and personal-best hunters.

The Super Social Wave turns the route into a rolling festival of friendship, flamboyant outfits and fun. Then come the elite women and men, where South Africa’s speed merchants will turn the final kilometres into a five-kilometre furnace.

“The beauty of the Boxer Super Run is that every participant can choose their place on the start line,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports.

“From runners chasing a personal best in the Open Wave and groups bringing the energy in the Super Social Wave, to the country’s top athletes battling for the Elite titles, each wave brings its own excitement and makes the Boxer Super Run a truly inclusive 5km experience.”

The Open Wave starts at 07:00, giving serious runners, school teams and club athletes the first crack at the course. For those chasing seconds, every bend can feel like a negotiation with the stopwatch and every stride a small down payment on glory.

From 08:00 to 09:30, the Super Social Wave takes over. Families, friends, colleagues, charities and colourful characters can walk, jog, laugh and soak up the atmosphere. The stopwatch can take a coffee break.

“The 5km distance makes this event accessible enough for someone taking on their first run, while still providing a genuine test for experienced athletes,” says Lee-Ann Pillay, Head of Marketing at Boxer Superstores.

“It is incredibly rewarding to see such a diverse group of people come together, each with their own reason for being there, but all united by the same 5km journey.”

At 09:45, the elite women take centre stage, followed by the elite men at 10:00. Here, five kilometres becomes a high-speed chess match, with every surge capable of rewriting the script.

Pillay says the four-wave format captures the event’s wider purpose.

“With four distinct waves offering four very different ways to experience race day, the Boxer Super Run continues to demonstrate that 5km running is for everyone, whether you’re chasing the clock, chasing a personal milestone or simply chasing a great day out.”

Entries are sold out, underlining the appetite for a race that has managed to squeeze competition, community and carnival spirit into one compact 5km package.

The route starts on Snell Parade near Blue Lagoon Park and finishes at Blue Lagoon Park, with the R100 entry including a performance T-shirt, goodie bag, race number and timing chip, on-route experience and finisher’s medal.

Four waves. Four moods. One Durban 5km where every runner gets to choose their own pace and write their own finish-line story.
