CAPE TOWN – All Blacks loose forward Wallace Sititi is looking forward to returning to Cape Town as New Zealand prepare to face the Stormers in the opening match of the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry Tour at DHL Stadium on Friday.
The 23-year-old heads into the clash as New Zealand looking to begin an eight-match South African tour on a positive note. Led by head coach Dave Rennie, the tour includes four Test matches against the Springboks and four midweek fixtures against United Rugby Championship (URC) franchises.
While Sititi admitted he has never had the opportunity to face South Africa’s franchise sides, he believes the experience will only make the All Blacks stronger.
“I wouldn’t know what it was like to play these franchises. At the same time, I would like to know as well,” said Sititi.
“A lot of the boys talk about the tours coming out here and they really enjoyed it. Also, we know how quality South African rugby is. Would it make us better rugby players? Yes, 100%. It’s quality opposition, but like I said, I wouldn’t know.”
Cape Town holds special memories for Sititi, who made his debut in the famous black and white jersey against the Springboks at DHL Stadium two years ago.
Returning to the Mother City brings back fond memories for the young loose forward, who has developed significantly since that milestone occasion.
“Two years ago feels like a long time ago,” he reflected. “One thing I do know is that I’ve got very good memories here in Cape Town.”
The warm reception the All Blacks have received since arriving in South Africa has also left an impression on Sititi, who believes the support has added to the excitement ahead of Friday night’s encounter.
“We’re really loved out here and we’ve definitely felt the love the last few days that we’ve been here,” he said.
The young forward also reflected on the challenges he has overcome since making his international debut, including injuries that tested his resilience.
“As a player, I’ve definitely grown a lot,” he adds. “I’ve been through a bit of adversity now and been through a lot of injuries. But that’s the game of rugby. It’s about the journey that got me here, and we’re just looking forward to this game.”
With the Stormers expected to provide a stern examination, Sititi and the All Blacks will be eager to make a strong start to their South African adventure before turning their attention to the remaining fixtures on the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry Tour.
