Gift Leotlela shines bright in shock Shanghai Diamond League 100m victory

South Africa’s sprinting engine roared into top gear on Saturday as Gift Leotlela produced the race of his life to win the men’s 100m at the 2026 Wanda Diamond League opener in Shanghai/Keqiao.

In a finish tighter than the final baton exchange of a relay showdown, Leotlela sliced through a world-class field in 9.97 seconds, dipping at the line with the precision of a sprinter diving through tape in a championship final.

The top three were separated by mere hundredths of a second, leaving the stadium scoreboard to deliver the verdict after a tense photo finish.

Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala clocked 9.98 for second after entering the field late, while American speedster Kenny Bednarek matched that time for third.

Leotlela arrived in China carrying a formidable 9.87 personal best and six legal sub-10 performances. Shanghai became another statement in a season that already appears loaded with ambition and momentum.

“It means a lot to win my first-ever Diamond League,” said Leotlela afterwards. “It is a first time in China for me, so to finish number one was a great feeling. I wanted to come here and enjoy myself and make a good start to the season.”

The South African revealed that composure became his greatest weapon in a race packed with explosive starters and decorated rivals.

“I knew I am in great shape, but I didn’t want to think about time, just focus on my race. I had a decent start, not great. I just tried to keep my composure, stay in my rhythm and stay strong.”

His words reflected the maturity of a sprinter beginning to harness raw speed with tactical calm. While others blasted from the blocks like fireworks, Leotlela ran with the patience of a seasoned closer before striking in the final metres.

“The main goal for me in 2026 is to win the Commonwealth Games and then on to the Ultimate Championships at the end of the season,” he added.

South Africa’s Akani Simbine placed sixth in 10.05, while Botswana sensation Letsile Tebogo finished seventh in 10.12.
