The Vodacom Bulls have tuned their machine for a fresh assault ahead of Saturday’s Vodacom United Rugby Championship clash against Zebre, reshuffling key combinations like a side preparing for the knockout thunder that waits around the corner.
Coach Johan Ackermann’s men arrive with fresh tyres, fresh muscle and fresh tactical wrinkles after making sweeping alterations to the matchday 23.
The headline switch sees Willie le Roux step into the flyhalf jersey, moving from the bench into the cockpit of the Bulls attack. Handre Pollard, the seasoned Springbok conductor, shifts to an impact role among the replacements where his experience could become a late-match trump card.
Behind him, the back three sparkles with attacking electricity. Kurt-Lee Arendse returns at fullback like a matchstick tossed into dry grass, while Cheswill Jooste earns a start on the wing. Canan Moodie slides into outside centre, adding pace and physical bite to a midfield expected to test Zebre’s defensive seams.
The Bulls have also rebuilt the front row from the ground up. Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Marco van Staden and Wilco Louw form a new-look front trio designed to scrum with the force of a collapsing maul.
In the engine room, JF van Heerden steps into the second row while Ruan Vermaak shifts into the starting combination. Captain Marcell Coetzee moves to blindside flank, with Jeandre Rudolph taking over at openside and Cameron Hanekom continuing at No 8 after another influential campaign.
A fresh halfback pairing of Paul de Wet and Le Roux will steer the Bulls around Loftus Versfeld, while Embrose Papier waits on the bench for a landmark moment. The scrumhalf is set to make his 170th appearance for the Bulls, surpassing legendary Springbok scrumhalf Joost van der Westhuizen as the franchise’s most capped No 9.

The replacements bench still carries serious ballast. Johan Grobbelaar, Gerhard Steenekamp and Francois Klopper provide scrum power, while Cobus Wiese adds steel to the locking stocks for the closing exchanges.
With several senior players unavailable, the Bulls have opted for calculated rotation rather than caution. The selection carries the feel of a side sharpening its blade for the business end of the URC season.
