CAPE TOWN – The Stormers produced a strong second-half performance to secure a 34-14 victory over Edinburgh in their United Rugby Championship (URC) Round 14 clash at DHL Stadium on Saturday night.
The match was tightly contested in the opening half, with both sides going into the break level at 7-7. Edinburgh struck through James Lang, while the Stormers responded to keep the scoreboard balanced in a physical and tactical battle.
The visitors edged ahead early in the second half, but the Stormers found another gear as the game wore on. Evan Roos proved instrumental, crossing twice in the 24th and 67th minutes, while veteran Deon Fourie added a late try to seal the result. Boan Venter also got on the scoresheet for Edinburgh, but the home side’s dominance in the final stages ensured a comfortable margin.
Stormers head coach John Dobson praised his team’s execution and commitment to the game plan.
“I must give everyone on the team credit. We had a plan. Damian [Willemse] on the wing. We won the scraps – we won the kicking contest,” said Dobson.
Despite the convincing scoreline, Dobson admitted there were moments of frustration, particularly at halftime.
“A bit frustrating at halftime not to have really, I think, a big swing with that intercept. Towards the end, we were well on top, and I think we could have done a bit more damage. But to me, very much job done. I just said to the team downstairs, I think a game where actually the process was probably better than the outcome. I thought there was a lot of stuff we worked on and wanted to do well – we did well,” he said.
Reflecting on a key period in the second half, he added: “If we’re looking, I mean, 14-12 down. It’s getting towards the hour mark, your heart rate’s climbing.”
The result strengthens the Stormers’ position as they continue their push in the competition.
The Stormers now sit second on the URC overall standings after 14 matches, with 51 points.
