There are moments in road running when instinct meets courage and the finish line becomes a proving ground. On Sunday morning in Cape Town, Tayla Kavanagh found that moment and seized it.
In a race that unfolded like a slow-burning fuse along the Atlantic seaboard, the 24-year-old from Hollywood Athletics Club produced a career-defining run to win the opening leg of the SPAR Grand Prix series, outkicking defending champion Glenrose Xaba in a thrilling dash to the line.
Kavanagh stopped the clock at a personal best 31:33, slicing eight seconds off her previous mark and announcing herself as a serious contender this season. The decisive move came in the final 50 metres, where she shifted gears with the precision of a runner who trusted both her legs and her plan.
Behind her, Xaba, a three-time SPAR Grand Prix champion, crossed in 31:38 after a relentless contest that tightened with every kilometre. Boxer Athletics Club teammate Kyla Jacobs followed in third in 32:16, completing a strong showing for the Gauteng-based squad.
Kavanagh’s race was built on patience. She ran within herself through the early stages, conserving energy as the pace ebbed and flowed, before unleashing her finishing kick when it mattered most.
“I knew I was coming into the race in pretty good shape, but I never expected to win the race today,” she said afterwards.
“I kind of just stuck to my plan, and I felt good in the last 1K. From about 9Ks, I just started to surge a bit. Glenrose came back at me, and I thought, ok let me keep trying. And as we took the last corner, I was like, I still got some gas in the legs, let me try.
“So, I took the risk and I brought it home. I was really happy to get a bit of a gap and to win. I’m super happy.”
That sense of control has been a key theme in her progression. After a strong 2025, Kavanagh entered the new season focused on consistency rather than chasing headlines.
“I had a really good year last year. So going into this season, I really wanted to build some consistency again. I was trying to continue that and it’s exactly what I managed to do today, so I’m really happy.”
The race itself drew a sea of colour through Green Point, with a record 18,000 women taking part in near-perfect conditions on a fast, flat route that started near the DHL Stadium and looped back to the Green Point Common Fields.
Further down the field, double Olympic 800m champion Caster Semenya, who coaches Xaba alongside her wife Violet Semenya, finished 12th in 35:44, underlining the depth and diversity of the competition.
Up front, Karabo More (32:34) and Cacisile Sosibo (32:42) rounded out the top five, while the rest of the elite field chased shadows cast by a race that set a fierce early tone for the series.
If this opener is any indication, the road ahead in the SPAR Grand Prix will demand more than strength. It will reward those who can read the race, trust their instincts and, when the moment arrives, run without hesitation.
