For thousands of runners dreaming of conquering Cape Town’s iconic 56km Totalsports TWO OCEANS ULTRA MARATHON powered by BYD, the biggest opponent may arrive long before Chapman’s Peak.
It is the calendar.
With the 2027 entries secured through the ballot, runners have been given a clear warning: qualifying and seeding deadlines are not decorative dates on a race notice. Miss them and months of training could run into a bureaucratic pothole.
For Ultra runners, the qualifying window opened on 1 May 2026 and closes at midnight on 7 March 2027.

A standard 42.2km marathon must be completed in under five hours. Longer races must meet the applicable Two Oceans qualifying standard. Races must be officially measured and timed, with distances complying with standards recognised by Athletics South Africa and World Athletics.
That means runners cannot rely on a casual GPS reading or a friendly local fun run and hope the stopwatch fairy sorts everything out.
Half Marathon entrants face their own deadline. An official 10km, 15km or 21.1km time must be submitted by midnight on 28 February 2027 to secure the appropriate start batch.
Chris Goldschmidt, Chairperson of the Two Oceans Marathon NPC, urged runners to get ahead of the deadlines.
“Race Day is the culmination of months of preparation, and we want to make sure that runners have all the information they need to prepare with confidence,” he said.
“These deadlines are important, particularly for ULTRA MARATHON entrants who need to meet the qualifying requirements and HALF MARATHON runners who want to ensure they are correctly seeded.”
Event Director Wade Bromfield delivered an equally blunt message: do not leave it until the last minute.
“Keeping track of these key dates is an important part of preparing for the Totalsports TWO OCEANS MARATHON,” he said.
The 2027 race week starts with the 8km Night Run on Wednesday, 31 March, followed by the 4.5km International Friendship Run on Thursday, 1 April.
Friday, 2 April brings the Trail Run, with 24km, 18km and 12km options and a capacity of 1 500.
Then comes the business end.
The 21.1km Half Marathon takes place on Saturday, 3 April, before the 56km Ultra Marathon storms onto the roads on Sunday, 4 April. Both finish at the UCT Rugby Fields.

The message is simple: preparation is more than hill repeats, tempo runs and battered toenails. Administration is part of the race too.
For Ultra hopefuls, 7 March 2027 is the red-letter date. For Half Marathon runners chasing the right batch, 28 February 2027 matters.
The mountain will wait.
The paperwork will not.
Official qualifying and seeding submissions can be made through the Totalsports TWO OCEANS MARATHON website.
