Springboks wholesale shake up for Scotland clash at Loftus

Pretoria – The Springboks are refusing to stand still. Coach Rassie Erasmus has once again stirred the selection pot, unveiling a dramatically reshaped side for Saturday’s Nations Championship clash against Scotland national rugby union team at Loftus Versfeld.

Ten changes to the starting XV tell their own story. This is not experimentation for its own sake. It is Erasmus polishing every blade in South Africa’s rugby armoury before the battles that lie beyond the Highveld.

Only five starters survive from the emphatic 45-21 victory over England. Jesse Kriel, Damian Willemse, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Paul de Villiers and Ruan Nortje remain in the starting line-up, providing the steel around which a fresh combination is forged.

Du Toit again carries the captain’s armband as he edges closer to the coveted century of Test appearances, while rookie De Villiers earns an immediate vote of confidence after an eye-catching debut against England.

The backline crackles with intrigue. Aphelele Fassi returns at fullback behind wings Edwill van der Merwe and Canan Moodie. The trusted midfield pairing of Kriel and Willemse provides stability, while Handré Pollard and Embrose Papier steer the ship in familiar surroundings at Loftus.

Up front, new combinations pack down with plenty to prove. Props Boan Venter, Johan Grobbelaar and Wilco Louw anchor the scrum, while Cobus Wiese partners Nortje in the engine room. De Villiers joins Du Toit and Evan Roos in a loose trio built for relentless collisions.

“We have good depth in our squad, and this will be a great test for the team,” Erasmus said.

“We told the players from the outset that we would give as many of them a chance as possible to play this season, while we are also trying to manage some players, while others are not available for selection this week, so it was important to select a team with some continuity from last week, while bringing in players we believe will be the right fit for what we are expecting from Scotland.

“They had a good Six Nations campaign, and they come off a victory against Argentina away, so they will be psyched up going into this match.”

Erasmus revealed confidence has been earned rather than gifted.

Springboks sounds early Nations Championship warning

“All of the players have been working extremely hard at training, and they are fully aware of the threat Scotland poses. Many of these combinations have played together for the Springboks and for their provincial teams this season.

“Many of the players will also be playing at their home ground at Loftus Versfeld, so they know the field and conditions well.”

There is no room for complacency despite South Africa winning nine consecutive Tests against Scotland since 2010 and boasting an imposing 25 victories in 30 meetings.

“They are a quality team, who will test us in all areas of the game, and they are well coached, so they will throw everything they have at us,” Erasmus warned.

“Matches against them are always tough, and looking back, there have been some very close encounters between the sides in the past, so we need to be switched on from the first whistle, be accurate in all departments of the game, and use our opportunities if we want to get the desired result.”

The Springboks may have changed the names on the team sheet, but the message remains unmistakably familiar. Competition never sleeps, jerseys are borrowed rather than owned, and Erasmus continues to build a squad where opportunity tackles reputation head-on.
