Mokoena rescues Bafana Bafana to earn crucial point against Czechia

CAPE TOWN – South Africa kept their FIFA World Cup hopes alive after battling back to secure a 1-1 draw against Czech Republic in their Group A clash at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday.

Hugo Broos’ men came into the encounter under pressure following their 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the opening match, while Czech were also seeking their first points after losing 2-1 to South Korea.

Bafana made changes to the starting line-up, with Oswin Appollis handed a starting berth in attack as Broos looked for a response.

However, the South Africans suffered an early setback when Czech midfielder Michal Sadílek opened the scoring in the sixth minute. The midfielder finished calmly from inside the box after being picked out by Alexandr Sojka to give the Europeans a 1-0 advantage.

South Africa responded positively and pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Appollis looked lively and nearly levelled matters in the 12th minute, but his effort was deflected behind for a corner.

As the half progressed, Bafana Bafana settled into the contest and enjoyed promising spells of possession. Khuliso Mudau and Thapelo Maseko both threatened, while the defence managed to contain Czechia’s attacking threats.

The second half saw Broos introduce Relebohile Mofokeng for Jaden Adams as South Africa adopted a more attacking approach. Despite creating several opportunities, Bafana struggled to find a breakthrough, with Maseko firing over the crossbar in the 54th minute.

The decisive moment arrived in the 81st minute when Maseko’s goal-bound effort struck Pavel Sulc’s hand inside the penalty area. After the referee pointed to the spot, Teboho Mokoena stepped up and calmly converted two minutes later to level the scores at 1-1.

Both sides pushed for a winner in the closing stages, but neither could find the decisive goal as the match ended all square.

The result gives South Africa their first point of the tournament and keeps their qualification hopes alive heading into their final Group A fixture against South Korea.
