CAPE TOWN – Stellenbosch FC captain and goalkeeper Sage Stephens believes that reaching yet another cup final is a clear reflection of the team’s hard work and progress.
The 34-year-old has emphasise that Stellies consistency on the big stage proves they are moving in the right direction and doing something good collectively as a unit.
The Cape Winelands side will once again feature on the big stage as they prepare to contest another MTN8 final, against Orlando Pirates, with the highly anticipated clash set to take place at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.
Stephens believes the time has come for the team to correct the mistakes of last year’s defeat to Pirates and to show how much they have grown since then.
“It’s special playing in another cup final,” said Stephens. “The team has done very well to get ourselves, to get our foot in the door.”
“This week has been bubbly, full of energy, and I’m looking forward to putting on a good show this weekend.
“We’re viewing this as one single game – from the start of this competition, we’ve always seen it as one game at a time. And like I said earlier, we’ve put our foot in the door now.”
Defender Omega Mdaka emphasized that securing victory on Saturday would not only be a proud achievement in itself but also serve as an important stepping stone towards building momentum and confidence for their Betway Premiership campaign.
“Going into the game, looking at how we played the past two games against AmaZulu, I think it was sort of like a comeback, showing the fight in the team,” said Mdaka.
“And then against Sekhukhune [United], it was just showing how much we want this again, because we really need that silverware to just get us going in the league.
“So I feel like, as a team, we’re very excited for the final.”
