Australia may have stumbled against South Africa in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final at Lord’s, but don’t think for a second that the fire’s gone out in their bellies. Cricket, regardless of format, has a long memory—and revenge, even in coloured clothing, is still sweet.
While the leather and willow in whites may differ from the crash-bang of T20s, Proteas all-format coach Shukri Conrad knows the Aussie desire to settle old scores won’t be dulled by the change in gear.
“It’s completely different formats with different players, but yes, I think with Aussies being Aussies they would want to pull one over us,” Conrad told The Athlete, his tone both wry and wary.”
The South Africans are heading to unfamiliar turf—Darwin, Cairns, and Mackay—for a limited-overs tour that may not set off sirens on the cricket calendar but could be a strategic powder keg as both nations gear up for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
“Playing against Australia is tough, playing against Australia in Australia is obviously tougher,” Conrad said, half-joking that he’d need to Google the venues after this Saturday’s Tri-Nations final against New Zealand in Zimbabwe.
“We will be playing at venues we know very little about. I don’t think too much international cricket has been played there.”
For the wily 58-year-old tactician, however, the trip isn’t just a detour—it’s a dress rehearsal. The fiery cauldron of Australian cricket will offer the Proteas a proper litmus test ahead of the T20 World Cup.
“Yes, it’s always going to be tough against Australia and will give us a good yardstick and benchmark in terms of where our players are at,” he said.
“But this is all part of the build-up to the T20 World Cup. It’s not an excuse for losing. We want to win every game and win every tournament.”
While the bruises of that Test triumph might still sting for the hosts, it’s the Proteas who are plotting quietly in the background—testing combinations, blooding youngsters, and sharpening edges.
“It will give some really good insights to where some of our players are and where we are at as a team as well.”
So, while the baggage may be different—white kits swapped for limited-overs flash—the border crossing into Australia always promises a battlefield. And this one, Conrad knows, could shape more than just a series—it could set the tone for global glory once again.
