Golden girl Gerda Steyn set to embrace new challenge

The golden girl of South African road running, Gerda Steyn, is set to embrace a new challenge as she lines up for the Boxer Super Run in Durban on Sunday, 13 October 2024.

The current Two Oceans (56km), Comrades (90km) ultramarathon and South African Marathon Champion (42.2km) and record-holder has enjoyed an exceptional year.

Steyn (34), who also represented South Africa at the Paris Olympics over 42.2km, will now test her speed in the much shorter 5km distance.

The queen of South African distance running enjoys supporting different races, often taking part in local events when her schedule permits it.

“The Boxer Super Run aligns perfectly with my training plans,” says an excited Steyn.

“I’m thrilled to be part of this event. A 5km road race is a fantastic concept for both social and elite runners in South Africa, and I’d love to see it grow from strength to strength.”

Steyn’s formidable 5km personal best of 15:45 showcases her versatility, proving that she’s not only a force in the longer distances but also a strong contender in shorter, faster races.

“I enjoy that the 5km is somewhat unfamiliar territory for me, which makes it a fresh challenge and a great way to gauge my fitness,” she adds.

“My goal is to run a strong race and compete at my best. I don’t have a specific time in mind—I’ll assess the weather and how my body feels on the day—but I’ll definitely be giving it my all!”

On the R147 200.00 prize purse, Steyn says: “The generous prize money makes this event even more appealing for athletes, adding extra motivation to perform well and push each other.

“I’m looking forward to joining everyone in Durban. I always cherish the support I get from the Durban running community, and I can’t wait to share the roads with everyone there.”

“We are incredibly excited to welcome Gerda Steyn, a true South African running icon, to the Boxer Super Run in Durban this year,” says Lee-Ann Pillay, Head of Marketing at Boxer Superstores.

“With her impressive achievements, from winning the 2024 Comrades and Two Oceans Marathons to competing at the Paris Olympics, Gerda’s participation adds a whole new level of prestige to the event.

“We can’t wait to see her in action and know that her presence will inspire runners of all levels to give their best on race day.”
