Khanyeza praises team effort after victory over Stellies

CAPE TOWN – Golden Arrows coach Mabhuti Khanyeza has applauded the team’s character in their 2-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC on Wednesday night.

Two goals from Lungelo Nguse and Siyanda Mthanti sank the Cape Winelands side in their Betway Premiership opener in a cold rainy stadium.

The 42-year-old Khanyeza praised the team’s effort despite wet windy conditions at Athlone Stadium.

“Stellenbosch is a good side, they’re sticking to their game plan, but there’s some individuals who are very, very special. I think they’re not here today, but each and everyone that was here, I think we managed to deal with the situation,” said Khanyeza.

“Good preparation for us and in dealing with any technical approach that they posed to us today.

“I think this past season it’s been difficult to come and play. We’ve been losing most of the time. I think the last time we won here it was 3-1, where we came fourth on the log, probably 2019 or something like that.”

Playing at Athlone Stadium has brought memories for the former Ajax Cape Town striker.

“We knew it was going to be a difficult game, but what was hip about it is that they brought the game in Athlone, a little bit of memories on my side when I was still playing here,” adds Khanyeza.

“That encouraged me a bit because I was telling the boys that it’s not the same when you play at Danie Craven. But when you play here at Athlone, it’s a little bit of not much of an advantage again to them.

“It favours anyone, but I think it was a very good game and very competitive.”
