Team South Africa kicked-off their the 2024 Paris Olympics on a positive note on Day 1 after the SA Men’s Sevens rugby team won bronze at the Stade de France on Saturday.

The trend is set to continue on Monday night after swimmers Pieter Coetze and Tatjana Smith qualified for the finals of Men’s 100m Backstroke and the Women’s 100m Breaststroke at the La Defense Arena on Sunday night respectively.

Both Coetze and Smith (née Schoenmaker) are realistic medal contenders in the pool.

Smith won the gold medal and set the world record in the 200-metre breaststroke  and also won the silver medal in the 100-metre breaststroke at the 2020 Olympic Games.

The 27-year-old will be aiming to improve on the silver medal she won at the Games in Japan in 2021 and also strive to successfully defend her 200m title she won in Tokyo.

Coetze set a new African record on his way to joint second place in his semi-final, reaching the wall in 52.63 seconds.

The 20-year-old was the joint third-fastest qualifier into Monday night’s final.

“I wasn’t thinking about time at all going into this. I just wanted to make the final so to get the time is always nice but it’s not really about times here,” said Coetzé afterwards.

“I’m just glad I made it back. At the Olympics, you just want a spot in the final because you can’t win a medal if you’re not in the final so you have to take it step by step and that’s how I like to do it.”

The Men’s 100m Backstroke final will take place at 21:19 and the Women’s 100m Breaststroke final at 21:25.
