CAPE TOWN – Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has praised his side’s strong ability for their 3-0 victory over struggling Cape Town Spurs at Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday night.
Goals from striker Iqraam Rayners, Darrel Matsheke and Jayden Adams sealed the three points for the Cape Winelands side.
Stellies came to the game after playing four matches in a row without losing, winning three and playing just one draw against Chippa United earlier this month.
Barker’s charges are sitting on the fourth spot in the DStv Premiership log, with five points behind the log leaders, Cape Town City.
He says even though they had a slow start they managed to find a way.
“Obviously delighted with the result and, you know, not always the three goals that we scored but the clean sheet that we kept, although we did make it difficult at times,” said Barker.
“I thought in the first half we struggled with the pitch, just like the ball doesn’t really roll as much as you would think it does, considering what the pitch looks like.
“So every time we sort of tried to play in the midfield or played square or played it back, we were sort of put under pressure – we would have to force back to Oscarine [Masuluke] and then we would kick it sort of back to them.
“So I don’t think we really were at our best in the first 45 minutes. So I wasn’t really pleased with the first 45, although obviously we had the goal. So in the second half I felt we handled that a lot better.”
