Precious Mashele is banking on marathon strength to tame Joburg’s hills, while Cacisile Sosibo prepares to unleash her speed as South Africa’s elite converge on the Boxer Super Run Joburg on 15 November.
The starting gun is primed, the stakes are rising and Johannesburg is preparing for a 5km showdown with plenty of firepower.
Leading the charge will be Boxer Athletics Club stars Precious Mashele and Cacisile Sosibo, two athletes bringing different ambitions to a race where every second counts and the finish line waits for nobody.
Mashele, an established campaigner, is relishing the opportunity to test his legs against a formidable field, particularly with prize money on offer for elite athletes.
“I am excited to compete in the event because there are so few 5km road races that offer prize money for elite athletes,” he says.
Currently building towards the Cape Town Marathon, Mashele hopes his endurance training will provide the ammunition to withstand the younger speed merchants. He knows the race could become a lung-busting battle when the road starts climbing.
“I don’t have the speed of the younger guys,” he admits, adding that his marathon preparation could deliver dividends in the closing stages.
With hills on the Joburg route, he is banking on strength rather than youthful acceleration to keep the challengers at bay.
“As an old soldier, I would be very pleased if I managed to achieve a top-ten finish against the young guns.”
For Sosibo, the occasion carries its own excitement. The Soweto-based runner will make her Boxer Super Run Joburg debut, eager to turn a familiar passion for 5km racing into a memorable performance.

Her race-day blueprint is deceptively simple: patience, precision and a powerful finish.
“My goal is to run smart, have a controlled start, a strong middle and a fast finish,” she says. “With 5km racing, you need speed, but also patience.”
Sosibo also believes the event captures something bigger than competition, bringing elite athletes, recreational runners and the wider Joburg community together.
With strong opposition and an attractive prize purse, she has her sights firmly set on a competitive finish.
Stillwater Sports Managing Director Michael Meyer believes the calibre of athletes on the start line will elevate the spectacle, while providing a valuable platform for established and emerging talent.
Boxer Superstores Head of Marketing Lee-Ann Pillay echoed that enthusiasm, highlighting the brand’s commitment to athletics, active lifestyles and inspiring the next generation.
The elite women start at 09:45, followed by the elite men at 10:00 on Sunday, 15 November. The 5km race starts on Orange Road, Emmarentia, with the finish at Marks Park Sports Club.
Entries are SOLD OUT.
The Boxer Super Run Joburg promises a morning of fast feet, fierce ambition and community spirit. For Mashele, it is a test of endurance against youth. For Sosibo, an opportunity to announce herself on home-city territory.
Five kilometres. Countless ambitions. One finish line. Joburg, get ready for a serious pace parade.
