Gavin Hunt rues missed chances after loss to Chippa

CAPE TOWN – Stellenbosch FC suffered a 2-0 defeat to Chippa United in their Betway Premiership encounter at Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday, with goals in either half handing the visitors all three points.

Chippa broke the deadlock in the 26th minute through Kaketso Majadibodu before Imraan Jones sealed the victory with an 82nd-minute strike to leave Stellies frustrated on home soil.

Despite creating opportunities, Stellenbosch were unable to find the back of the net, with head coach Gavin Hunt believing his side had enough chances to take control of the contest.

Hunt felt the opening goal proved decisive, particularly after Stellies had created several promising opportunities before falling behind.

“The first goal was a killer, you know, but before that we could have been 2-0 up. We had two great chances and then we had, I don’t know, one clear, two clear off the line. You know, you don’t score those chances, they go in, you know, it’s a different ball game,” said Hunt.

“If we got to 1-1, there was only going to be one winner and we should have still won the game even when we were 1-0 down after halftime, but we didn’t get the chance.”

The result leaves Stellenbosch in eighth position on the Betway Premiership standings with 10 points after nine matches. The Cape Winelands outfit have recorded two victories, five draws and two defeats so far this season.

“And then the breakaway goal at the end of theirs is going to happen because we’re pushing and, you know, players are coming off. We’re putting midfield players at the back and, you know, trying to be more creative and obviously run out of players in certain areas. But fair play to them, the score line, you can’t change it,” he said.

“We have to be better and we should have been better, but you’ve got to defend. You know, the first goal was a killer. It’s a killer.”
