Purple patch: Tayla Kavanagh on her historic sub-31 SA 10km record

Tayla Kavanagh has put South African women’s distance running on a new road after obliterating the national 10km record in Romania.

Hollywood Athletics Club star  knew the South African 10km record was within reach. In Brasov on Sunday, she chased it down, ran it into the ground and left the stopwatch gasping for breath.

“I knew I wasn’t that far off the record previously so I came into the race with the mindset of running as fast as I could today,” said the 25-year-old Hollywood Athletics Club Purple Elite star after storming to 30:50 at the Brasov Running Festival.

“Breaking the record felt extra special and it was an absolute privilege to get the opportunity to line up and race against a world-class field.”

Kavanagh finished fifth in a quality international field, but the finishing order told only part of the story. Her blistering performance sliced 22 seconds off Glenrose Xaba’s South African record of 31:12, making her the first South African woman to break 31 minutes for 10km.

She also demolished her previous personal best of 31:26 by 36 seconds. That is a substantial chunk of time to carve off an elite runner’s personal best, equivalent to ripping several pages from the record book in a single morning.

“I’m incredibly proud and it feels really special,” she said. “I’m super proud to have performed super well in a great field.”

For Kavanagh, 2026 has become a season in which milestones are falling like runners at the start of a crowded cross-country race.

Only 15 days earlier, she set a South African 5km road record of 14:51 at the World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen. She has now rewritten the national record books over both distances in barely a fortnight, putting the country’s women’s road running on notice.

“2026 has been a dream year come true for my running career,” she said. “I’m so incredibly happy. I’m incredibly happy with today’s performance and I’m really proud of myself for putting myself in the race and racing competitively with the international ladies.”

Her record-breaking road exploits have been backed by formidable credentials on the track. Kavanagh claimed South African titles over 5 000m and 10 000m this year, while her 14:58.52 over 5 000m made her only the third South African woman to break the 15-minute barrier.

In August, she won the Hollywoodbets Durban 10km in 31:39 despite an early fall, recovering to set a course record. That performance hinted at what was coming. In Romania, she turned promise into a national landmark.

Her progress also raises an intriguing question for South African athletics: how much further can the record fall as she continues to develop against the world’s best?

For now, Kavanagh is preparing to step away from competition and recharge after a season spent pushing the boundaries.

“Breaking the SA record today means a lot to me. I started my road running career at 16,” she said, reflecting on the significance of the achievement.

“I’m proud with what I have achieved, I’ll now be taking an offseason which I’m really looking forward to, for not just a physical, but also a mental break.”

She also reserved heartfelt thanks for the people behind her purple racing vest.

“I’m always so thankful for the support, encouragement and cheers I receive from my Hollywood Athletics Club. It’s incredibly motivating to have so much support behind you and it really does go a long way in helping you feel valued and appreciated.”

The stopwatch has delivered its verdict. Kavanagh owns the South African 10km record, the national 5km road record and a place among the country’s leading distance runners.

At 25, she has already made the sub-31-minute barrier history. The next challenge is to discover how much faster she can make it run.
